Michael V. Hayden – Obama admnistration takes several wrong paths in dealing with terrorism – washingtonpost.com

We got it wrong in Detroit on Christmas Day. We allowed an enemy combatant the protections of our Constitution before we had adequately interrogated him. Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab is not “an isolated extremist.” He is the tip of the spear of a complex al-Qaeda plot to kill Americans in our homeland.

In the 50 minutes the FBI had to question him, agents reportedly got actionable intelligence. Good. But were there any experts on al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula in the room (other than Abdulmutallab)? Was there anyone intimately familiar with any National Security Agency raw traffic to, from or about the captured terrorist? Did they have a list or photos of suspected recruits?

When questioning its detainees, the CIA routinely turns the information provided over to its experts for verification and recommendations for follow-up. The responses of these experts — “Press him more on this, he knows the details” or “First time we’ve heard that” — helps set up more detailed questioning.

None of that happened in Detroit. In fact, we ensured that it wouldn’t. After the first session, the FBI Mirandized Abdulmutallab and — to preserve a potential prosecution — sent in a “clean team” of agents who could have no knowledge of what Abdulmutallab had provided before he was given his constitutional warnings. As has been widely reported, Abdulmutallab then exercised his right to remain silent.

And why did we get it wrong?

Because our government thinks that al-Qaeda are criminals along the lines of street gangs or the Mafia. They are not.

They are loosely connected Muslim fanatics that actually think that Allah commands them to kill unbelievers. They believe this with the same certainty that Keith Olbermann has that Bill O’Reilly is the devil. Maybe even stronger than that.

They do not consider death or imprisonment a deterrence, it is the will of Allah and not punishment.

This sets us up for a tiger ride. Do we continue to handle them with legalistic kid gloves and learn to live with the attacks? If so, they will certainly try to make them more and more horrible. Or do we squeeze them and hunt them, which will lead to them attempting more and more horrible attacks. But succeeding less.

It’s a war. And wars are nasty things that result in the death and maiming of thousands of innocent (or not so innocent) people. But not fighting a war results in the death and maiming of thousands of innocent (or not so innocent) people you know. It’s a Tiger tail situation. Do we hang on and hope we aren’t eaten, or do we let go and hope we can kill the tiger before it eats us?

You Knew This Was Coming. Didn’t You?

CNSNews.com – Charges Against Gitmo Terror Suspect Should Be Thrown Out, Lawyer Argues

New York (AP) – A lawyer asked a judge Monday to toss out charges against the first Guantanamo Bay detainee to be brought to civilian courts, saying he was tortured for 14 hours over five days and denied trial for nearly five years.

Attorney Peter Enrique Quijano told U.S. District Judge Lewis Kaplan that Ahmed Khalfan Ghailani’s right to a speedy trial was violated when he was sent after his July 2004 arrest to a secret CIA-run interrogation camp abroad rather than to the U.S. for a civilian trial.

Glad To See It. But How Influential Is The Islamic Supreme Council of Canada?

Top Muslim clerics issue Fatwa denouncing terror attacks on Canada and U.S | VANCOUVERITE

CALGARY – Top Imams affiliated with the Islamic Supreme Council of Canada have issued a fatwa calling those terrorists who attack the United States and Canada “evil.”The Fatwa is the most important condemnation of terrorists who try to hurt people living in Canada. Extremists have been told that any attack on the U.S. or on Canada will be construed as an attack on 10 million Muslims who live in these two countries.

“This is the first Fatwa by the Muslim clergy declaring attacks on Canada and the United States as attack on Muslims. Following is the text of the Fatwa. A Fatwa is a religious edict.

Now. will someone have guts enough to ask Islamic groups such as CAIR if they will support this fatwa?

“Clueless” Describes Our Entire Intelligence Apparatus.

RealClearPolitics – Video – Napolitano Most Surprised By “Determination Of al-Qaeda”

Question: What was the most shocking, stunning thing that you found out of the review? And, Secretary, to you, as well.SECRETARY NAPOLITANO: I think, following up on that, not just the determination of al Qaeda and al Qaeda Arabian Peninsula, but the tactic of using an individual to foment an attack, as opposed to a large conspiracy or a multi-person conspiracy such as we saw in 9/11, that is something that affects intelligence.

You mean that the tactic of the “suicide bomber” surprised them?

I guess that’s not too surpising when you consider that our inteeligence agencies were taken by surprise by the the Iranian Revolution, the collapse of the Soviet Union, the rise of Hugo Chavez, pretty much anything the North Koreans do, the first WTC bombing, the embassy bombings, the USS Cole, Khobar Towers, 9/11, the lack of WMD in Iraq, the Iraqi resistance,…..pretty much any important development in the world in the past 50 years.

So, they didn’t see this coming? It probably would have been more surprising if they had.

They’re Only “Rehabbed” If They Want To Be

Picture this: Art Therapy for Terrorists – NYPOST.com

A cushy Saudi Arabian “rehab” center where terrorists are encouraged to express themselves through crayon drawings, water sports and video games is under scrutiny after one of its graduates re-emerged as a leader in the al Qaeda branch claiming responsibility for trying to blow up an airliner on Christmas.

Said Ali al Shihri — a former Guantanamo Bay detainee who now heads the terror group al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula — obviously didn’t get to the bottom of his America-hating issues while undergoing the controversial rehab for jihadists.

This just brings out the illogic of the whole forced rehab thing.

The people in the program can only be ‘rehabbed’ if they want to be.

If they are not inclined to be changed and are fairly bright, or just cunning, they can game the system. Just as thousands of drunks and addicts game the rehab system they are forced into.

As for the treatment? I shudder to think what constitutes “water sports” in an Islamic society.

Iowahawk Special Guest Opinion
by Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab

Yesterday while I was lying in the burn ward getting my crotch bandages changed, I had a chance to catch the air disaster movie marathon on TCM. The lineup included “Zero Hour,” “The High and the Mighty,” “Skyjacked,” and “Airport ’75.” For all their campy fun and unintentional laughs, those corny old films really serve as a grim reminder how the whole in-flight terror experience has gone completely downhill since the jet set golden years of the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s. What happened to all those pretty stewardesses and polite, well dressed infidels, screaming as the plane plummeted to the ground? Time was, a suicide mission to explode an international jumbo jet was an event full of glamor and excitement; but now it seems to be a endless series of delays, hassles, pushy jerks and third-degree testicular chemical burns. And don’t even get me started on the crappy airline food.

Isn’t That What They Said After 911?

Levin: May be more troubling emails from Hasan

Sen. Joe Lieberman, chairman of the Senate Homeland Security Committee, said it appears there was enough information available to law enforcement, the military and intelligence agencies to raise alarm bells about Hasan but no one connected the dots.“Had it been gathered on one desk, someone might have said ‘Nidal Malik Hasan is dangerous,'” Lieberman, a Connecticut independent, told reporters after the briefing.

That resulted in the Patriot Act, which Democrats have been working to weaken ever since.

I have always wondered what the Liberal would say after the next terrorist attack. I guess we’re going to find out.

Why I Don’t Bother To Watch ABC News.

I usually limit my TV news intake to local news stations. They cover the news I care about and can usually be trusted to be reasonably accurate. Just as long a the news doesn’t concern Public Employees, Union, Illegal Immigrants or other subjects where reporting is circumscribed  by Political Correctness.

Today I was on the treadmill and my wife had the flipper. She left to do something and I was presented with ABC News and the shocking story of an innocent Muslim who was driven to gun down 13 people at Ft Hood because he thought some of those soldiers should be prosecuted for War Crimes, and they weren’t.

Hasan Wanted Soldiers Prosecuted, Officials Said – ABC News

Major Nidal Malik Hasan’s military superiors repeatedly ignored or rebuffed his efforts to open criminal prosecutions of soldiers he claimed had confessed to “war crimes” during psychiatric counseling, according to investigative reports circulated among federal law enforcement officials.

His supervisor in the Department of Psychiatry, Captain Naomi Surman, told investigators that Hasan raised similar issues with her in conversations in October, according to documents reviewed by ABC News.

Captain Surman told investigators that Hasan had formally contacted military prosecutors to report patients he was evaluating, according to people briefed on the exchange. She said Hasan signed his e-mails with “Praise Be to Allah.” Legal analysts say psychiatrists are strictly bound by the rules of patient confidentiality except in cases where they might become aware of crimes about to be committed.

Captain Surman, who was scheduled to be deployed to Afghanistan with Hasan on Nov. 2 told investigators that Hasan had both social and academic issues in his medical training. She said that on one occasion, Hasan told her she was an infidel who would be “ripped to shreds” and “burn in hell” because she was not Muslim.

So you see, those shooting were not the fault of one man, it especially not due to his Muslim faith. It was entirely the fault of the Bush War Machine, and the uncaring attitudes of the American Public. And there were no red flags, nothing out of the ordinary, nothing suspicious.

No one could have see this coming.

(ABC did not make that the theme of their story, but it ran right under the surface.)

The only logical explanation, after examining all the availalbe evidence, is that this was a one-of-a-kind incident. Probably brought on by the constant harassment by Dr. Hasan’s colleagues, who insisted on not being Muslim, Carrie Prejean’s videoes, and his mental anguish over the failure of Sarah Pailin to admit her unworthiness for political office and fade away, allowing the News Media to once again turn their attention to the Greatness of Barrack Obama and the earthly paradise that he will lead us too. A future where no one will insult Muslims by not becoming one or refusing to pay the “jizya” of the dhimmi.
