Diplomacy With Autocannibals And Rerapists – In Nick Kristof’s Fantasy World

The Grotesque Vocabulary in Congo – NYTimes.com

I’ve learned some new words. One is “autocannibalism,” coined in French but equally appropriate in English. It describes what happens when a militia here in eastern Congo’s endless war cuts flesh from living victims and forces them to eat it.

Another is “re-rape.” The need for that term arose because doctors were seeing women and girls raped, re-raped and re-raped again, here in the world capital of murder, rape, mutilation.

And what is Kristof’s reaction to such savagery?

[I]sn’t it time for the U.S. to lead a major, global diplomatic push for peace?

No Mr. Kristof, it’s time for the inhabitants of the Dark Continent to give up their wait for the white bwana to come save them and take care of the problem themselves.

I’m not even sure I think that is possible. But if it is, it is not going to be accomplished by the former white colonialists parachuting back into their countries with plans and timetables. There’s a distinct element of “They’re Wogs, Y’know.” hiding under the carefully articulated phrases meant to convey that the whites really “care”, while shaking their heads an muttering to themselves about the unchangeability of Africa.

I rarely read Kristof. He lives in a world so alien from the one I live in that I have to wonder that he can survive. His previously Quixotic quest to save two bar girls in Cambodia ran into real life when he returned and found that one of the girls had gong right back to the brothel. The other was probably not far behind. If Kristof spent more time with the objects of his pity and less time talking to people that make their living extracting money from guilt bound foreigners, he might actually learn something.

But, since he does make his living as a guilt bound liberal, it wouldn’t pay.

Interesting? That’s An Understatement.

Hacked: Sensitive Documents Lifted from Hadley Climate Center – Environmental Capital – WSJ

Well, this should get interesting. The Hadley Climate Research Unit in Britain was hacked yesterday, apparently by Russian black hats, and thousands of sensitive documents, including emails from climate scientists dating back a decade, were posted online. [snip]

Officials at Hadley, a leading global-warming research center, have apparently confirmed to an Australian a Kiwi publication that the documents are genuine.

The whole affair has much of the blogosphere alight. Blogs skeptical of man-made global warming see blood in the water.

Some of the old emails from scientists made public apparently make references to things like “hid[ing] the decline,” referring to global temperature series and different ways to slice and dice climate data.

In all, it seems there are more than 3,000 files in the hacked folders, which have been reposted in various places on the Internet.

The big Copenhagen summit had lost a lot of its appeal in recent days, as world leaders kept dialing down expectations for the climate talks. Maybe this will spice things up.

Wow. Between this and the new ACORN tapes there is a lot of potential to upset a bunch of apple-carts.

But notice that it is Friday, the traditional day for news which is destined to be buried. The Sunday shows are either going to be fireworks or they may just ignore it. It wouldn’t be the first time.

There’s a lot of very lucrative rice bowls at stake here.

Damage control is quick off the mark.

Hacked E-Mail Is New Fodder for Climate Dispute – NYTimes.com

The evidence pointing to a growing human contribution to global warming is so widely accepted that the hacked material is unlikely to erode the overall argument. However, the documents will undoubtedly raise questions about the quality of research on some specific questions and the actions of some scientists.

I don’t understand. How can files showing that the ‘scientists’ fudged the research on AGW NOT erode the theory?

Iowahawk Gathers The (Barely) Rejected Stories About The Ft Hood Shootings

Big Hollywood Headline Roundup: Troubled American Psychiatrist Allegedly Turns Gun on Warmongers at Ft. Hood

Iowahawk had gathered the first submissions of various newspaper stories in different markets. Most were heavily changed before publication, others not so much.

As usual, Iowahawk provides the answers to questions we never asked, but wish we had.

What if Bush had done that? – Yahoo! News

A four-hour stop in New Orleans, on his way to a $3 million fundraiser.

Snubbing the Dalai Lama.

Signing off on a secret deal with drug makers.

Freezing out a TV network.

Doing more fundraisers than the last president. More golf, too.

President Barack Obama has done all of those things — and more.

What’s remarkable is what hasn’t happened. These episodes haven’t become metaphors for Obama’s personal and political character — or consuming controversies that sidetracked the rest of his agenda.

It’s a sign that the media’s echo chamber can be a funny thing, prone to the vagaries of news judgment, and an illustration that, in politics, context is everything.

Conservatives look on with a mix of indignation and amazement and ask: Imagine the fuss if George W. Bush had done these things?

ACORN Names Damage Control Team

My Way News – Embattled ACORN orders independent investigation

ACORN will work with its advisory council, which includes prominent supporters of President Barack Obama, such as John Podesta, president of the nonprofit Center for American Progress, and Andrew Stern, president of the Service Employees International Union, to name an independent auditor and investigator, ACORN chief executive Bertha Lewis said in a written statement.

The investigation will examine all the systems and processes called into question by the video, Lewis said.

Yeah, a ‘council’ made up of supporters and cronies is just what is needed.

What disturbing is that the news media will accept this as a real investigation.

Come on! They’ve been shown to be crooks and scammers more than once. Under the bus with them!

Waters: Probe ‘birthers and the teabaggers’ at rallies for racist views – The Hill’s Blog Briefing Room

The media should investigate the racial views of conservative activists like the ones who descended on Washington last weekend, one liberal congresswoman said Wednesday.

Rep. Maxine Waters (D-Calif.) said that it’s not enough for African-Americans to levy allegations of racism against the right-leaning protesters, and that the media must look into their views.

Since the MSM has decided to act as an adjunct to the White House and DNC press offices, I would say she has a good chance of getting what she wants.

The news media is deathly afraid of being called ‘racist’.

Washington Post Style Reporter: The Peasants Are Revolting! And Badly Dressed.

Robin Givhan: At Health-Care Reform Gatherings, Clothes Speak Loudly, Too – washingtonpost.com

By and large, the shouters are dressed in a way that underscores their Average Guy — or Gal — bona fides. They are wearing T-shirts, baseball caps, promotional polo shirts and sundresses with bra straps sliding down their arm. They wear fuchsia bandannas and American-flag hankies wrapped around their skulls like sweatbands. A lot of them look as though they could be attending a sporting event and, as it turns out, the congressman is the opposing player they have decided to heckle. If not for the prohibition on signs and banners inside these meetings, one could well expect to see some of these volatile worker bees wearing face paint and foam fingers, albeit the highlighted digit would be one expressing foul displeasure rather than competitive rank or skill level.

As usual Robin finds that ordinary people in general and conservatives in particular do not live up to her exacting standards.

You recall her shocked sermon on the way the Supreme Court Justice John Roberts family was dressed at his swearing in.

I can’t seem to find the column where she gave us her judgment on either Bush protesters or ACORN “organizers”.

Just an oversight, I’m sure.

But wasn’t it Nancy Pelosi that pointed out that the Health Care protesters were “too well dressed”?
