Of Arms and the Law: UN report proclaims self-defense is not a right

One of those highly paid totally unaccountable UN bureaucrats has come out with a report that says that there is no right to self-defense.

This woman, like all other UN bureaucrats, has never had to be elected by the public, is not accountable to any elected official and seems to derive her opinion from laws that were never written or voted on by our elected official. Just why we should pay attention to her, rather than the drive-thru person at the local McDonald’s is not clear. Seems to me that she’s a glorified DMV clerk.

But it would seem that the only difference between UN officials and the old aristocracy it that the aristocrats had grander titles. Somehow “Special Rapporteur” doesn’t have the same ring as “Grand Duchess”.

This Doesn’t Smell Right

However much it would support what I think of the antiwar protesters, I’m not convinced that this incident is real.

I answer 911 calls and regular calls for Police and Fire all day long. If someone called me with this story I would dispatch a cop, but I’d need a lot more information before I believed it.

KIROTV.com – News – National Guardsman Brutally Attacked In Pierce County

The soldier was walking to a convenience store when a sport utility vehicle pulled up alongside him and the driver asked if he was in the military and if he had been in any action.

The driver then got out of the vehicle, displayed a gun and shouted insults at the victim. Four other suspects exited the vehicle and knocked the soldier down, punching and kicking him.

“And during the assault the suspects called him a baby killer. At that point they got into the car and drove off and left him on the side of the road,”

Pierce County? That’s where Ft. Lewis is. You can’t turn around without bumping into an active duty or retired soldier. Pierce County is not a hotbed of antiwar protesters.

Even without that, a bunch of people with guns? They just pulled up out of nowhere and attacked him? According to the new reports it was at a busy intersection in the morning. But no one saw this?

Usually when people tell me stories like this I find out later that there is a whole lot that they’re not telling me. Either that or they just made it up to cover up a fight with their wife or boyfriend.

It wouldn’t surprise me at all to find out that this is a hoax. I hope I’m wrong.

Update: 09/01/06

A witness who came forward after the incident told KIRO 7 Eyewitness News a different story about what happened on Tuesday morning, but deputies said the witness later changed that story when they interviewed him.

The witness told police he saw several men in uniform beat a man in civilian clothes, but later changed his account to back the guardsman.

Investigators said the witness’s stories were inconsistent with the guardsman’s, and they are back to “square one” in the investigation.

It’s not clear from this story exactly whose stories were inconsistant, the witness who originally claimed that soldiers beat a civilian or some other witnesses.

I’m still not comfortable with it. I live in a mostly rural area and everytime something happens on the street we get cell phone calls from hordes of people. Weren’t there any calls about this incident? This is a densely populated area.

The Lady Or The Tiger?

Neal Boortz gives a rundown of the options available for dealing the the Iranian Mullahs determination to develop nuclear weapons.

None of them are good, but which is the least bad and has a chance of working?

This whole “being the President” thing is just so easy, isn’t it? Why, George Bush could certainly handle the job if he just wasn’t so dumb, right?

OK …let’s consider Iran. In just a few paragraph here I’ll have you saying “Damn, I’m sure glad I’m not the one who has to make these decisions.”

First: Iran is working toward a nuclear bomb. I don’t care how many times Mahmoud Ahmadinejad talks about nuclear power plants for electricity, every sane person in this country knows that a nuclear weapon is his true goal.

Let’s spend just a few moments thinking of what happens when Iran gets the bomb. There are several scenarios. A nuclear strike on Israel is one, of course. Would the West retaliate? Perhaps. Remember, though … Ahmadinejad and his Islamic fascist pals don’t really care how many of their countrymen are killed in any retaliation. They way they look at it, they’re fighting and dying for Allah, and this guarantees their place in paradise. Kill infidels, or die trying to kill infidels. It make no difference. In their twisted vision of their religious duty, it’s all the same.

So … Iran makes a few nuclear weapons. They then use the porous border between the U.S. and Mexico to bring one of those bombs into the U.S. Perhaps in the well-shielded back of a minivan. They park the minivan in a garage of some ordinary house in an obscure neighborhood in some mid-sized American city. Then they conduct a nuclear test in Iran. Surprise! We have the bomb!

As the world is reacting to the Iranian nuclear test, some deranged Mullah steps up to the microphones to inform the world that there is a bomb just like the one they tested somewhere in the United States. There’s another in some Western European country. The world is then informed that both of these bombs will be detonated unless certain Islamic demands are met.

What demands? Well, let’s start with the removal of all U.S. and Western troops out of the Middle East. Then all Jews are told to leave Israel or face annihilation. The U.S. is told that if we dare to defend Israel, the bomb will be detonated. In short order the Islamic fascists have complete control over the entire Middle East. All moderate Arab governments will fall. The Persians of Iran will rule. All oil supplies to the Western world will be held hostage to Iranian demands.

Now … is there anything in this scenario thus far that you think is absurd? Can you not see things playing out pretty much this way? Sure, there are as many possibilities are there are people capable of dreaming them up. Any way you look at it, Iran with a nuclear bomb isn’t a warm and fuzzy thought.

So .. what do we do?

There are three main alternatives.

Diplomacy ?
Sanctions against Iran ?
Military action ?

Even When They Lose, They Win

The Stratfor Terrorism Intelligence Report has an excellent report on the results of derailing the terrorist attack on airplanes in the UK.

Al Qaeda believes that it can win a war of attrition against the United States, and the group’s leadership has said so repeatedly in public messages. They do not think that the United States has the stomach or the attention span to go toe-to-toe in the late rounds of the fight. As bin Laden noted in a 1996 fatwa: “However, when tens of your solders were killed in minor battles and one American pilot was dragged in the streets of Mogadishu, you left the area — carrying disappointment, humiliation, defeat and your dead with you.”

To wage this war of attrition, al Qaeda’s chief requirements are to survive — or answer the bell at the beginning of each round — issue threats and conduct an occasional strike to prove they are still relevant. The large number of media releases from al Qaeda leaders this year show that they have indeed survived. The statements also may be an attempt to overwhelm and exhaust the enemy. Obviously, the United States and its allies cannot conceivably protect everything, and attempts to do so take great tolls on human resources and finances.

Viewed through this lens, the responses to the disrupted airlines plot may, in fact, be a form of success for al Qaeda, despite the failure of the actual plot.

Unfortunately; there are many American’s, mostly Democrats, that agree that we cannot win. They think we should acquiesce to their demands, whatever they are, and negotiate for the best surrender terms we can get.

Due to the defused nature of the threat, it is not possible to target a specific group of people in a specific location. The problem is not one that will be defeated by capturing or killing their leaders, however satisfying that might be. The idea that terrorism has an address, in Afghanistan, and is attributable to one man, Osama bin Laden, is ludicrous. The threat can only be met by attempting to change the culture that give rise to it. That is vast numbers of people with no hope of improving their lives. People that see the luxurious lifestyles of their rulers and the West and wonder why they don’t have the same. The area has only one country that is prosperous and free…Israel.

What is needed is to change the culture and the reality of the region. That was what we attempted by overthrowing Saddam. Iraq has a population of educated and hardworking people. If we could free them from the yoke of the traditional Arab dictatorship and allow them to build a free and prosperous country, that would go a long way in showing other people in the region that they too could have the lives that they envy Israel and the West for.

But a lot of people think that we should give up, that it’s just too hard, too expensive; that we should back another authoritarian ruler who could keep the different factions under control, even if that means reinstating the Secret Police and reopening the torture rooms. That’s something that might give us some temporary respite but it would just move the day of reckoning down the road a few years…and possibly not even that long.

Thank You John McCain

Now it’s official, The First Amendment is void.

With a 3-3 vote featuring Democrat commissioners supporting the silencing of political speech against congressional incumbents and Republican commissioners in favoring of allowing it, the Federal Elections Commission has now made it official – As required by the McCain-Feingold Bipartisan Campaign Finance Reform Act of 2002, there can be no paid political broadcast ads criticizing incumbent Members of Congress for the two months prior to the Nov. 7 election.

It’s no surprise that Democrats would vote against Free Speech. They only support the Constitution when it suits their political agenda.

But the Democrats wouldn’t have had the opportunity to put their desires into practice without the McCain-Feingold Campaign Finance Reform act. This is a foul legislation and I hope that someone stands up and refuses to abide by it. That might get it back in front of the Supremes with someone asking the right questions.

I think that John McCain’s Presidential aspirations just took a direct hit. It would also be good to research Final Vote Results for Roll Call 34“>the votes on the bill and make the supporters answer for their votes. It might be too much to hope for their defeats but it would be enjoyable to watch them squirm while they’re trying to justify their votes.

This Used To Be Called Common Sense

But now it will get you charged with a hate crime. AskMom has a reality check for those who urge us not to “profile” Muslims as terrorists. Why was it that when Oklahoma City was bombed they didn’t waste time checking out the Black Panthers or the Chinese Tongs? They had as much to do with the bombing as the “militias”. Because they looked like the guys that actually did it. Profiling wasn’t a problem then, why now?

AskMom: Naming Rights

Weasel words in the newspapers don’t change the way ordinary people see things. When you worry about your husband’s plane being hijacked and flown into a building, knowing that screeners will do a politically correct search of someone’s Aunt Tilly doesn’t ease your mind. When your child isn’t allowed to say a Christian prayer before he eats his school lunch, but your tax dollars are paying for him to study Muslim prayers, you feel betrayed, not diversified, no matter how Katie Couric may lecture you about it.

While we allow radical leftists and their dupes to play games with our language, Jihadists are arming themselves and planning the next attacks. We can cut the crap now and get serious before the grief of a huge loss makes us insane and vicious. Or we can let the games go on until the rules get changed for us. If an American city goes up in a nuclear blast, do you think anyone will care about the “civil rights” of those suspected of pushing the button? If 100,000 Americans die from poisoned municipal water, will a distaste for “profiling” stop the authorities from rounding up and pummeling the truth out of every Islamist male they can find?

Names matter; teminology matters. I say we do whatever we have to do to stop these animals before they murder our children. I think that’s clear and I mean exactly what I’m saying. I hear plenty of other ordinary Americans say the same plain words.

The Story Spike Lee Didn’t Film

Spike Lee is getting a lot of publicity right now for his film “When the Levees Broke: A Requiem in Four Acts” because it tells the story of the flooding of New Orleans after Katrina in a way that a lot of people want it told. But if you’re interested in what really happened you have to read this collection of posting at Wizbang blog. The story of what happened, while it happened, by people who were there.

The Katrina Video Congress Didn’t Want You To See – Wizbang

I’m going to warn you now. If you’ve only heard the news from the mainstream media, everything you think you know about Katrina flooding New Orleans is wrong. If you think you already know everything there is to know about Katrina, then you can safely ignore this post. – If the sum total of your interest in New Orleans flooding is to bash Nagin or Bush, then please… Go to where your intellect will be more appreciated. If you’d like to have your whole understanding of the Great Flood of New Orleans changed, hang on, it’s going to be a bumpy ride.

We’ve all heard the story, in the early morning hours of Aug 29, 2005, the Category 4 Hurricane Katrina roared ashore, overwhelming the New Orleans levee system and flooding the city. If you read Wizbang, you’ve known since early October of 2005 this story was fatally flawed.

In the months since Katrina, we’ve learned that the storm was a Category 1 by the time she hit New Orleans. No “Super Hurricane,” just an average storm. We’ve also learned that the New Orleans Hurricane Protection System was not overwhelmed by Katrina, it collapsed. Causing the Corps of Engineers admit they flooded New Orleans not Katrina… An admission that got scant little media coverage. The Great Flood of New Orleans was not a natural disaster but a man made one.

NYT Vindicates Ann Coulter

Ann Coulter has been criticized for many things, but one thing in particular that a lot of people thought was over the top was her proposal in a column on 9/12 that “We should invade their countries, kill their leaders and convert them to Christianity”.

There have been billions of electrons tortured and spun by writers from left to right criticizing that as “insensitive” and harmful.

But now, in the wake of the kidnapping of two Fox News journalists we find that forcing people to convert is not harmful at all. Even when it’s done at gunpoint.

Fox News Journalists Free After Declaring Conversion – New York Times

JERUSALEM, Aug. 27 — Two journalists kidnapped in Gaza were released unharmed on Sunday after being forced at gunpoint to say on a videotape that they had converted to Islam.

If the New York Times says it, then it must be true.

Now I’m sure that those who have waxed apoplectic about Ms. Coulter’s remarks will be apologizing for doubting her. She knew all along that forcing someone to convert their religion at gunpoint is no more harmful than being forced to listen to Kayne West

And we have to ask ourselves what kind of people are these that not only didn’t respect the religious preferences of their captives, but forced them to change them by threat of force. If the treatment of the prisoners at Gitmo is treatment comparable to the Nazis, and we are assured by those on the left that there is absolutely no difference, then this treatment must show that the Palestinians cannot be supported except by those who embrace the values of Nazis.
