Oh, This Is Good

Mirror, Mirror, on the wall, who’s the greenest of them all? @ AMERICAN DIGEST

Our New Saints have had this vision. It has been extracted from their Book of Climate Revelations like crystal meth from cold pills, and we should not gainsay it simply because their generation absorbed enough pyschoactive chemicals over the decades to gobstop a pod of blue whales. What if they did? What if all this is some bizarre vision; some acid-flashforward? Is it any less a vision for having “consensus science” behind it.

I say that we should honor their shared hallucinations, that we should not take away one iota of a scintilla of a jot of their monumental self-esteem. After all, the rich, famous and deranged have feelings too. Besides, we no longer institutionalize people who “see dead planets.” We just check them into rehab for the afternoon.

We should not, say I, condemn these self-appointed and cross-annointed latter-day saviors of our poor Planet.

We should instead worship and envy them their daily martyrdom of living on a planet with people who “just don’t get it!”

We should confess unto them that we are but the poorer un-sanctified humans who could not afford huge mansions and private jets.

It is our own fault that we are “left behind;” condemned to dwell in the carbon clouds of burned jet fuel to forever languish in the hellish roiling clouds of soot and pollution that mark the landscapes of America from sea to turbid sludgefilled sea.

Meanwhile, high overhead, the Goreacle and his heavenly host jet to their global rock concerts up where the champagne is always chilled and the chocolate cookies always warmed.

They are truly the Chosen and they are off into their own private Rapture.

God speed, say I. The best we can hope for here on the plains of eco-sin is a recumbent bicycle etched and rusted by the unceasing acid rain, and an invitiation to cold coffee at a modest ranch house in Crawford.

This Is A War We Need To Lose

The Drug War that is. It’s not worth the cost or the casualties.

The Corner on National Review Online

British officials are worried about the consequences of US proposals to eradicate Afghanistan’s opium poppy harvest, which include spraying the crops from the air, a policy it adopted in Colombia. The fear is that tough anti-narcotic measures now would alienate poor farmers who have no alternative livelihood and drive more Afghans into the hands of the Taliban. Such a policy would further endanger British troops, military commanders say. “

Legalize it and allow the addicts to choose whether they want to do. If they choose to keep using then they’ll just die.

Sorry Al, Ain’t Buying It

Gore Responds To Drudge’s Latest Hysterics

The right-wing is angry that Al Gore has won so much public attention and goodwill for his work on global warming… [Drudge stinks, blah blah blah, and now the rationalizations]

1) Gore’s family has taken numerous steps to reduce the carbon footprint of their private residence, including signing up for 100 percent green power through Green Power Switch, installing solar panels, and using compact fluorescent bulbs and other energy saving technology.

2) Gore has had a consistent position of purchasing carbon offsets to offset the family’s carbon footprint — a concept the right-wing fails to understand…

These are the lengths that climate skeptics must go to suppress action on global warming. There is no meaningful debate within the scientific community, so the right-wing busies itself with talk about how much electricity Al Gore’s house uses — and even then they distort the truth.

What exactly is the truth that that is being distorted?

That Gore wants everyone else to reduce their consumption while maintaining his? Or that he thinks that he can buy his way out of practicing what he is preaching?

Al and his family are like abolitionists that pay someone else to take their place in the Civil War. Rich people have always been able to buy absolution for their sins. It was a major source of income for the church in the Middle Ages. That doesn’t make it right.

I’m sure that Al, or more likely his publicist, would be eager to tell us that he doesn’t consider himself any better than anyone else. But is that a real belief or just rhetoric?

Al’s supporters see him as a kind of Messiah, come to lead us away from a world of greed and waste. But why should he be able to talk the talk and not expect people to notice that he is not walking the walk? Why should his family be able to pollute at a higher rate than a poorer family? I thought equality was the watchword of Liberal Democrats?

If consumption must be decreased it would seem to me that the place to begin is with the big consumers. That would be people like Al. If we’re to take him seriously we should figure out how a family the size of Gore’s must live to end global warming and do it. No matter if the family is in an upscale neighborhood or the ghetto. What’s sauce for the goose…and all that. None of this purchasing of “offsets”.

As Treacher says in his comments, no one knows where or even if, these trees or other offset are being planted, or whatever it is they promise to do. Even if they are doing it, there are other Liberal considerations. Are the workers paid a living wage? Do they have medical insurance? What about a retirement plan? Are they members of a labor union; if not, why not?. You can’t collect pretty vouchers saying that they are offsetting your pollution without taking responsibility for the details.

Personally, I look at every environmental “activist” as part of the baseline. If they are calling for decreased consumption while living in a house on several acres in the country, they are going to have to reduce their consumption to below mine before I am even going to consider anything.

Timber – Jackson County, one of many to lose federal money, hopes to pass a levy

Jackson County commissioners have said they must use money devoted to running the libraries to fill a $23 million hole in the budget left by the loss of federal timber payments.

You see, because the U.S. government owns most of the land in many counties but doesn’t pay property tax, they used to allow logging with the money going to the counties to replace the lost property tax revenue. But the environmentalists decided that logging was bad and worked for years to shut the logging down. This had an adverse affect on the economy of the timber counties and our politicians decided to take other people’s tax money and use it to buy forgiveness for ruining so many lives.

And it worked for a while.

But now the politicians have other interests. So they took the money they had promised to the timber counties and spent it on someone else. Just as they will with your Social Security other entitlements.

They were from the government and they promised help. Now you can understand the futility of trusting them on that.

Global Warming Vanquished!

The governors of five Western States have decided that they will take care of global warming themselves.

Oregon joins 4 states in greenhouse battle

Oregon will join four other Western states in setting limits on greenhouse gases produced by everything from the car you drive to the power plant that supplies your electricity.

This will, of course, raise the price of everything, but, by golly, you can afford it. Besides it’s important that we take care of this problem in Oregon without delay.

The governors said the West is especially vulnerable, as global warming leads to more severe droughts and wildfires; and earlier snowmelt, leaving less water in the heat of summer.

So when the rest of the country is suffering from scorching hot summers and battling wildfires, we will have temperatures neither above nor below normal and our countryside will not be plagued with wildfires. At least the part of the state that burned the last couple of years won’t anyhow.

We can glory in our abundant snowpacks and water while the rest of the country worries about droughts.

But the Governor doesn’t enlighten us as to when global warming is going to be vanquished. An oversight I’m sure. There must be a plan somewhere. They’re not just pulling this out of their asses, are they?

Wyden Chooses Between Party And Country

Ron Wyden is first and foremost a loyal Democrat. So when the Party leaders proposes a plan to insure an American defeat in Iraq there is no hesitance.

There never is. Ron is every bit as much a Party man as any member of the Politburo or Reichstag. When the leadership says “jump” he says “how high” and you don’t want to be anywhere around him when they say “shit.”

Wyden backs plan to limit combat role

They like to kid themselves that a defeat in Iraq would be only a defeat for Bush, but is would be a defeat for America. But it would not stop in Iraq. It will affect the situation in Afghanistan and other fronts in the GWOT, it will also affect our ability to project military force at all.

How willing will a country be to host our military when it will upset their Muslim population, draw al-Qaeda, and there is almost a certainty that the U.S. will abandon them if things get rough?

Why would our soldiers and Marines be willing to be put in precarious situations far away when they cannot trust their political leadership to support them?

The Democrats like to talk the “diplomacy” talk, but without a credible threat behind the velvet glove “diplomacy” is just empty words.

America got most of our reputation from our actions in WWII, Korea and events like the Berlin Airlift, where we stood strong in the face of adversity.. The “Greatest Generation” lived through the depression and won WWII but the generations since has more and more proved themselves incapable of living up to that reputation. We’ve been dining out on those accomplishments for fifty years but now it’s coming to an end. Selling out and slinking off in Iraq will put paid to the last vestiges of that.

A Different Kind Of Peace Marcher

Thailand is facing an “insurgency” in the South. But a lot of people want peace.

2,000 in southern peace march

Business operators joined around 2,000 people from all walks of life in a march for peace as violence continued in the deep South, and intelligence reports warned of a new flare-up in the region and possibly in Bangkok in the coming weeks.

But, Thailand is different, and their idea of a peace march is also different. While most “peace” marchers elsewhere are really advocating for surrender, these marchers have different ideas.

The demonstrators called on the state to provide more arms and communications devices, and funds so communities can strengthen and defend themselves.

Communities arming and defending themselves against the insurgents? What a concept.
