EPA May Reverse Bush, Limit Carbon Emissions From Coal-Fired Plants – washingtonpost.com

The Environmental Protection Agency will reopen the possibility of regulating carbon dioxide emissions from coal-fired power plants, tossing aside a December Bush administration memorandum that declared that the agency would not limit the emissions.

The decision could mark the first step toward placing limits on greenhouse gases emitted by coal plants, an issue that has been hotly contested by the coal industry and environmentalists since April 2007, when the Supreme Court ruled that carbon dioxide should be considered a pollutant under the Clean Air Act.

The result? Higher electricity prices for openers. And what if the “Utility Board” won’t allow the rate to rise enough to cover the extra expense?

Then there is the very real possibility that some power utilities that depend on coal burning generating plants (which is most of them), might be forced into bankruptcy.

There are two possible outcomes to bankruptcy. One is that someone buys them out and restructures, a slim to non-existent possibility given their regulatory burden.

Or they might just shut down resulting in blackouts and brownouts until other sources of power are found. But since every other utility would be doing the same thing, the price of other power would skyrocket. Which they would have to pass on to the ratepayers if the Utility Board allowed them to. If not, we’re back to blackouts and brownouts.

The people that are invested in “alternative power,” like Al Gore, will clean up. Their power might be expensive and unreliable, but when you have the government kneecap your competition, it doesn’t matter.

What next? Obviously the country can’t run without power. So Obama, or Kulongoski, will ride to the rescue by having the government nationalize the power grid.

Then it will be an “emergency” and they will only be doing it to save us.

Goodbye America. Hello Cuba.

We’re toast.

This Is Something That Didn’t Need To Be On The Front Page.

Secrecy and denial as Pakistan lets CIA use airbase to strike militants – Times Online

The CIA is secretly using an airbase in southern Pakistan to launch the Predator drones that observe and attack al-Qaeda and Taleban militants on the Pakistani side of the border with Afghanistan, a Times investigation has found. The Pakistani and US governments have repeatedly denied that Washington is running military operations, covert or otherwise, on Pakistani territory — a hugely sensitive issue in the predominantly Muslim country.

What is it with “Times” newspapers? First the New York Times publishs details about how were are tracking terrorist funding and now the Times of London thinks it would be marvolous if everyone in the world knew that we are basing Predator drones out of the base in Pakistan.

If the Democrats were so worried about who “leaked” the name of Valerie Plame, who was a CIA analyst at Langely, maybe they should find out who is blabbering about our secret bases to the press.

Oh, Senator Feinstein? Oops! I guess there’s no chance that anything would happen to her even if she were caught faxing the NSA intercepts to Islambad.

Can these people possibly be any dumber?

A Trip To The Museum – Transterrestrial Musings

Finally, during the war, one of the hallmarks of the Nazi regime was to control the flow of information to the German citizenry. I hadn’t realized that they actually built specialized radios whose sensitivity was so weak that they could only pick up German government signals, but generally not overseas views (such as the BBC). They viewed clandestine listeners to foreign broadcasts as traitors to the state, undermining the war effort. I’m certainly glad we live in a nation where such attitudes would be odious, to both Congress and the President.

All in all, it was a relief to leave the museum, and walk back across the mall toward the White House, secure in the knowledge that such things could never occur here.

Reading about the propaganda and the treatment of illicit listeners always reminds me of Pauli.

Pauli was a German technician that I worked with in Germany back in the 1980s. His father had had a radio capable of picking up the BBC. About 2 weeks before the end of the war the Gestapo and SS showed up at their door and hanged his father from the lamppost outside. Pauli had to watch.

It must have troubled him far more than anyone knew. He had been a telephone technician for the American Army since the early 1950’s. We put in an electronic switch in the early 1980s. The next day he went around saying goodbye to all his neighbors. (A bad sign) Then he went home and hanged himself.

He was another casualty of the Nazi Socialists. He just didn’t die until almost 40 years after their fall.

Come For The Steyn, Stay For The Whiners.

Agency review: Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario

This is a transcript of the Ontario Legislative Assembly reviewing the actions of the Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario.

Steyn, as usual, makes a witty, cogent case for Free Speech. But although a couple of the legislators cross wits with him, it is plain that they came half armed.

From then on it’s as if he never spoke. The rest of the testimony is from the slickest bunch of professional whiners as you would ever care to meet. (If you cared to meet them. Which I wouldn’t advise)

It seems that these “Human Rights” cases are a club that they use to prevent anyone from questioning them or expressing anything but compliance.

Read it. It’s pure bureaucratspeak other than Steyn’s testimony. It’s pretty plain that there is one standard for the politically correct and protected groups and another for everyone else.

Skullduggery! What Happened To E-Verify?

Several times I have posted supporting the requirement that contractors receiving funds under the “stimulus” bill be required to use e-verify to ensure that their workers are citizens or legal residents.

It seemed to me to be a no-brainer and not too intrusive.

I was amazed to find out that it indeed was part of the House Bill. At least our “stimulus” money would be stimulating our economy instead of Mexico’s. We send quite enough their was through the use of narcotics. Why send more?

But somewhere in the House version and the final bill, it disappeared. No one seems to know what happened to it. They assure us that they checked the conference room and looked under the table, but it just got lost and no one seems to know what happened.

I think we need to know. I am going to write my Senators (both Democrats) asking them to find out. I suggest that everyone write to their Senators too. Someone knows what happened to it.

S2012 CONGRESSIONAL RECORD—SENATE February 9, 2009

Mr. Sessions: E-Verify is being used by over 100,000 businesses across America. It is a free, voluntary system set up by the Department Homeland Security. E-Verify allows any employer who has an interest in making sure they hire legal workers to simply punch in the Social Security number, and within a few minutes it shows whether there is a problem with that number. Ninety-six percent of the persons queried are approved immediately.

Employers can feel good, even feel safe in hiring those approved by the system, even though that is not absolute proof of the legal status of that applicant.

I simply want to offer in this amendment exactly the same language that was accepted, without a vote, in the House bill. Furthermore, the language that extends the E-Verify program passed the House by a vote of 407 to 2 last July. The amendment simply extends the E-verify program, No. 1, and also says that if a company gets stimulus money, money which is supposed to create jobs for Americans, they ought to take the 2 minutes to check to make sure that the people they are hiring are lawfully here. We want to make sure that only citizens and people who are here legally can be hired. This includes green card holders and temporary workers who are here on valid visas. This amendment would ensure that only people who are illegally here don’t get hired.

The leadership in the Senate, for some reason, has made up their minds that they are not going to let us vote on it. If we had a vote on it, it would pass. It already passed the House, and if it passes the Senate, it must be a part of the final bill. It cannot be taken out in conference without real sculduggery undertaken, and I think it would be in the final bill.

The game here is clearly to subtly and otherwise keep this vote from occurring, let this bill be forced out of here. It will not be in the Senate bill. It will be in the House bill. And the conferees will meet and they will decide to take it out. That is what is happening. If the American people want to know, if the Members of Congress would like to know why people are so upset with us, it is this kind of game playing. All the Members of the House who voted for it can tell their constituents: I voted for it. I don’t know why it wasn’t in final passage. And people in the Senate could say: I didn’t vote on it. I would have been for it if I didn’t get to vote. But the net result is it is not part of the law.

I cannot imagine why persons would not want this amendment to be in any legislation that would at least take the steps to see that those who are illegally in the country do not get this money.

What kind of skullduggery happened behind those closed doors? Any why were the doors closed in the first place? What happened to “transparency”? Or was that just empty rhetoric for the rubes?

Bad If You Do It, But OK If Mother Nature Does It

Bushfires release huge carbon load | The Australian

VICTORIA’S bushfires have released a massive amount of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere – almost equal to Australia’s industrial emission for an entire year.

Mark Adams, from the University of Sydney, said the emissions from bushfires were far beyond what could be contained through carbon capture and needed to be addressed in the next international agreement.

“Once you are starting to burn millions of hectares of eucalypt forest, then you are putting into the atmosphere very large amounts of carbon,” Professor Adams said.

In work for the Bushfire Co-operative Research Centre, he estimated the 2003 and 2006-07 bushfires could have put 20-30million tonnes of carbon (70-105 million tonnes of carbon dioxide) into the atmosphere.

“That is far, far more than we’re ever going to be able to sequester from planting trees or promoting carbon capture,” he said.

“Global Warming” stupidity continues.

Maybe they’ll outlaw forest fires?

Here in the State the Forest Service has changed their fire suppression activities because fire is “natural”. This means they’ll let the fires burn unless they endanger people or structures.

I wonder if California is going to count the carbon released by their annual brush fires against their carbon limit?

My Congressman and Senators Don’t Think They Need To.

Pray Your Members of Congress Took Speed Reading Lessons : The Sundries Shack

It is now 7 PM and the Democrats in Congress have yet to give their Republican counterparts a copy of the final Stimulus Bill for them to read. Steny Hoyer says that the House is going to move toward a vote starting at 9 AM tomorrow.

Today’s version of the bill clocks in at 1,434 pages and that’s not the final version. What Congress will likely vote on tomorrow (because President Obama has practically demanded that he sign it on Monday) is likely going to be larger.

My Congressman is Peter DeFazio and my Senators are Ron Wyden and some guy named Merkley. They don’t speedboat and they don’t think they need to. They’re Democrats.

I think a nice thing for everyone to do would be to pick sections of the bill and write them asking detailed questions and reasons for something was included in the bill, since the justification given is “stimulus.”

Here’s a link to both versions with some commentary. The Democrats haven’t released the text of the 1,434 page bill that they want everyone to vote on tomorrow. I guess those promises to make sure all bill were posted for 48 hrs before the vote were just so much Washington bilge water. But it points out how well the Democrats keep their promises.

Remember what Larry Summers said; “Temporary, Targeted and Timely” I beleive he mentioned as the criterea for “stimulus”. Write your Congressmen and ask them why the military appropriations for Operations and Maintenance (a recurring expense) is included as part of a “stimulus”. You could also ask them about the board who will be appointed to oversee our medical care and insure that we don’t use non-approved treatments or medicine. (Say goodbye to those cutting edge drugs and treatments. No incentive to do that anymore)

I’m sure that with very little effort you can find all kinds of things to question them about.

Don’t get nasty and watch your language. Be polite and ask the question without rancor. Just be specific about what you are asking about and insist that you get an answer. For best effect write only your own Senators and Congressmen. They normally won’t answer people from outside their districts.

You want to put your own Senator or Congressman on the spot. Let them know that their answers, or lack of them, will be posted on a blog. If you don’t have a blog put it on someone else’s. Ask the proprietor, of course. I think that most would have no problem wit that.
