The Consent of the Governed

The Consent of the Governed

The vital role of consent in the structure of a just government is one of the most powerful ideas ever advanced by the human race. On the other hand, the belief that consent can be manufactured by democratic majorities is one of the most cherished illusions of activist government. The dissent of a minority is not rendered irrelevant by victory in a popular vote… but the health-care debate in the Senate proceeds on the assumption that victory in a parliamentary struggle between a hundred elected officials will compel the consent of the millions of citizens – now a sizable majority of the population, based on the latest polls – who strenuously object to ObamaCare. If Senate Democrats win this debate, huge amounts of your liberty will be destroyed, and vast sums of money will be seized from taxpayers… and you will not be allowed to object. Any attempt to withhold your consent from this economy-shattering, life-changing radical legislation will end with you sitting in a prison cell.

“Consent of the governed” seems to be one of those old fashioned concepts that the government, both Democrat and Republican, but more Democrat, seems to have decided to scrap as outdated. If you can get one vote more than the other guy then you’re awarded dictatorial powers over everyone.

Our present government seems to want to emulate the European Union, where decisions are made by unelected, unaccountable bureaucrats that can’t be investigated or removed by the citizenry. That might work in Europe. They have a long history of domestication. The concept of “Consent of the governed” has never held much sway there.

But American are different than Europeans. They’re much more fractious (and armed) than the Europeans. They have a sense of fairness that doesn’t mix well with pronouncements on high. If you think the “tea party” movement is loud and obnoxious now, just wait until you try to cram something lie this Health Care monstrosity down their throats. Congressmen will have to sneak back into their districts.

I can’t see anything good coming from any of this.

Huckabee’s Willy Horton

Man sought in slayings was granted clemency by former Gov. Huckabee | Seattle Times Newspaper

Nine years ago, then-Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee granted clemency to Clemmons, commuting his lengthy prison sentence over the protests of prosecutors.”This is the day I’ve been dreading for a long time,” Larry Jegley, prosecuting attorney for Arkansas’ Pulaski County said Sunday night when informed that Clemmons was being sought in connection to the killings.

Clemmons’ criminal history includes at least five felony convictions in Arkansas and at least eight felony charges in Washington. The record also stands out for the number of times he has been released from custody despite questions about the danger he posed.

Clemmons had been in jail in Pierce County for the past several months on a pending charge of second-degree rape of a child.

He was released from custody just six days ago, even though he was wanted on a fugitive warrant out of Arkansas and was staring at eight felony charges in all out of Washington state.

It looks like Huckabee is only one in a series of people that dropped the ball on this bozo.

But that doesn’t matter. I never supported him for President and if he ran I would have held my nose and voted for him. But with this I would probably just stay home. (I don’t think there is anything that would make me vote for a Democrat.)

2009 Corruption Perceptions Index: Who’s Corrupt, and Who’s Not So Corrupt

CPI 2009 Table/2009/cpi/surveys_indices/policy_research

According to the Index, New Zealand and Denmark and numbers 1 and 2 as the least corrupt. followed closely by Singapore and Sweden tied for number 3.

The United States comes in at number 19. We would probably do better except for Congress. But Puerto Rico is counted separately, coming in at number 35.

Russia is tied at number 146, tied with Cameroon, Ecuador, Kenya, Sierra Leone, Timor-Leste, Ukraine, and Zimbabwe.

Zimbabwe? That’s not a neighborhood I would want to be included in.

Brother Hugo’s Venezuela, the lodestone for all American leftists, comes in at number 162.

And the two most corrupt states are… Afghanistan and Somalia.

Remember though, this is just a measure of perception, not an actual measurement of corruption, which would surely be…corrupt.

Most people in Oregon perceive their State government to be be honest. Even though the Governor and most of the legislature are firmly in the pockets of Labor Unions and Lobbyists.

Isn’t That What They Said After 911?

Levin: May be more troubling emails from Hasan

Sen. Joe Lieberman, chairman of the Senate Homeland Security Committee, said it appears there was enough information available to law enforcement, the military and intelligence agencies to raise alarm bells about Hasan but no one connected the dots.“Had it been gathered on one desk, someone might have said ‘Nidal Malik Hasan is dangerous,'” Lieberman, a Connecticut independent, told reporters after the briefing.

That resulted in the Patriot Act, which Democrats have been working to weaken ever since.

I have always wondered what the Liberal would say after the next terrorist attack. I guess we’re going to find out.

Interesting? That’s An Understatement.

Hacked: Sensitive Documents Lifted from Hadley Climate Center – Environmental Capital – WSJ

Well, this should get interesting. The Hadley Climate Research Unit in Britain was hacked yesterday, apparently by Russian black hats, and thousands of sensitive documents, including emails from climate scientists dating back a decade, were posted online. [snip]

Officials at Hadley, a leading global-warming research center, have apparently confirmed to an Australian a Kiwi publication that the documents are genuine.

The whole affair has much of the blogosphere alight. Blogs skeptical of man-made global warming see blood in the water.

Some of the old emails from scientists made public apparently make references to things like “hid[ing] the decline,” referring to global temperature series and different ways to slice and dice climate data.

In all, it seems there are more than 3,000 files in the hacked folders, which have been reposted in various places on the Internet.

The big Copenhagen summit had lost a lot of its appeal in recent days, as world leaders kept dialing down expectations for the climate talks. Maybe this will spice things up.

Wow. Between this and the new ACORN tapes there is a lot of potential to upset a bunch of apple-carts.

But notice that it is Friday, the traditional day for news which is destined to be buried. The Sunday shows are either going to be fireworks or they may just ignore it. It wouldn’t be the first time.

There’s a lot of very lucrative rice bowls at stake here.

Damage control is quick off the mark.

Hacked E-Mail Is New Fodder for Climate Dispute – NYTimes.com

The evidence pointing to a growing human contribution to global warming is so widely accepted that the hacked material is unlikely to erode the overall argument. However, the documents will undoubtedly raise questions about the quality of research on some specific questions and the actions of some scientists.

I don’t understand. How can files showing that the ‘scientists’ fudged the research on AGW NOT erode the theory?

These Kids Really NEED An Education

Protesters gather at UCLA to oppose UC fee hike

About 30 to 50 protesters staged a takeover of Campbell Hall, a building across campus that houses ethnic studies, said UCLA spokesman Phil Hampton.

They chained the doors shut but were peaceful and there were no immediate plans to remove them, Hampton said.

No arrests had been made, although 14 demonstrators were arrested on Wednesday and cited for failure to disperse or disturbing the peace.

OMG, it’s hilarious. Of all the building to take over I can’t think of one that is less critical than the “ethnic studies” building.

Don’t they know that “ethnic studies” is code for “welfare degree”. Is there a huge “ethnic studies” industry that is clamoring for workers? Did anyone win the Nobel Prize for Ethnic Studies this year? (Obama doesn’t count)

“Ethnic Studies” could be totally eliminated without affecting the education of anyone except maybe a few football players and other “must pass” boneheads. Think of all the money they would save. That might reduce or eliminate the fee increase.

Obviously critical thinking is not a strong suit among UC students.

Wow! Tax The World? All Your Taxes Belong To Us. Democratik Uber Alles

Wall Street tax must be international: Pelosi | Reuters

WASHINGTON Reuters – Any tax imposed on financial transactions would have to take effect internationally to keep Wall Street jobs and related business from moving overseas, U.S. House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi said on Thursday.”It would have to be an international rule, not just a U.S. rule,” Pelosi said at a news conference. “We couldn’t do it alone, we’d have to do it as an international initiative.”

Can you imagine if she were successful? A Democrat wet dream. This would go right to the heart of Socialism’s weakness. They would never run out of other people’s money.

But, of course, they would. And it would make Oil-for-Food look like a corner crap game. More of Nancy’s increasingly obvious megalomania.
