Former CIA director John M. Deutch told Congress yesterday that failure to find chemical or biological weapons in Iraq would represent “an intelligence failure . . . of massive proportions.”
The only identification of Mr, Deutch in this story is as a “Former CIA director”. Nowhere does it identify him as a CIA Director under President Clinton. He was Director from 1995 to 1996. Did the CIA believe there were weapons of mass destruction in Iraq at that time?
Why, yes they did.
Would those facts be germane to the story?
Why, yes they would.
But the story couldn’t be as easily spun against Bush.
